A tragic incident unfolded at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, as a stampede during the distribution of palliatives resulted in the deaths of two female students and left several others injured.
The convocation square of the university served as the venue for the distribution of palliatives by the Nasarawa State government, where the unfortunate stampede occurred.
According to a source within the university, the stampede led to the suffocation of the victims due to the overwhelming crowd, with healthcare workers later confirming their demise.
Yunusa Baduku, the National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, described the incident as uncalled for and lamented the overwhelming number of students who breached security measures to access the distribution venue.
Baduku reported that many female students sustained injuries of varying degrees, while others were suffocated amidst the crowded venue. He confirmed the death of one student and highlighted the ongoing efforts to provide medical attention to the injured.
The prompt response of the university’s management, student leaders, and representatives of the state government in assisting the injured students was commended by Baduku. He expressed gratitude for their efforts to address the situation and restore normalcy to the school environment.
The tragedy occurred following the recent distribution of palliatives by the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, to students of other tertiary institutions in the state, underscoring the importance of ensuring adequate safety measures during such endeavors.
