Ebira Foods: in this post today I will be analyzing the Top 10 Ebira Foods and Their Ingredients also i will be given short descriptions on each food/soup and if possible the nutrients they contained. All Ebira foods focused on local ingredients in promoting food richness.

What’s Ebira Foods?

Ebira Foods are foods eaten by the Ebira People of Nigeria (Anebira) popularly eaten in Kogi State in Okene to be precise. Some of the typical foods Ebira People own includes the Apapa (The Major Ebira food) Iya, Uka and Eba/Garri.

1. Iya (Pounded Yam)

Iya is also known as “Pounded Yam” in English Language” is one of the native Ebira Foods (Isori Anebira) Gotten from Yam, and its most favorable dinner meal eaten in Nigeria. Even though, pounded yam (Iya) is considered as Ebira Food, some tribes in Nigeria like Yoruba People in Ekiti cherish this food more than any other tribe in the country.

Since farming is the major occupation of Ebira People, Iya is one of the best food we have existing some people will tell you they prefer Uka (Cassava flour) to Iya (Pounded Yam) but deep down they know Iya is still by far the best food to eat.

Soups you can use for Pounded Yam (Iya): Okra Soup (Epehu), Epeza, etc

Pounded yam doesn’t select soup, you just need to select the best soup of your taste

2. Apapa (Ebira Moi-Moi Made from Beans)

The thing is, as Anebiras are concern Apapa is one of the most popular Ebira Foods throughout generation, Apapa is the food you can easily tag Ebira People with, go to institutions across the world where Ebira People celebrate their heritage, you will notice that the local delicacy to cook is Apapa.

Apapa Ingredients

  • Beans
  • Red Oil
  • Crayfish (Optional) but Recommended
  • Eggs (Optional)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Maggi/Seasoning
  • Nylon, Leaf or Cans

3. Garri/Eba (Gotten from Cassava)

The man power itself, did i say Apapa is the most popular Ebira Food? Yes it’s but Garri is the most widely taken food all over Nigeria, Garri has saved me so many times. and the savings continues.

Meet Garri the food Nigerian students prefer to Pocket Money. Garri is gotten from Cassava and it undergoes processes similar to Cassava flour. the difference is that Cassava Flour is sundried while Garri is friend. we can get Eba from Garri or you can add water and drink.

Garri Ingredients

  • Garri
  • Water
  • Groundnut and/or Goundnut Cake (Optional but Recommended)
  • Sugar (Optional but Recommended)
  • Milk (Optional but Recommended)

Eba Ingredients

  • Garri
  • Hot Water

4. Epete (Porridge Beans)

I know people will say i should just mention Eza (Beans) but Epete is the native name for beans in Ebira Language so I will stick to beans as Epete.

Beans is the third most widely consumed foods in Nigeria after Rice and Garri, Beans can be prepared locally as porridge or you can decide to spice it up by preparing it white and add stew or any other Soup of your choice.

5. Asharo (Yam Poridge)

Asharo is an easy one pot dish of yam porridge/pottage which is popular in western Nigeria. Different from the other type of yam porridge, Asharo is cooked with tomatoes and peppers, then mashed to a complete puree or with a few lumps of yam left unmeshed for texture.

It is most times cooked without any leafy vegetables or herbs. The addition of leafy vegetables and herbs is totally optional e.g. ugwu, green amaranth, curry leaves etc. If you read my post on yam porridge, you will know that it is one of the dishes that really float my boat.

6. Uka (Cassava or Yam Flour)

We have varieties of Uka which are Lafun (Cassava Flour), Elubo (Yam Flour), Uka Apapa (Corn Flour). The Uka made from Yam flour is brownish in color, the one gotten from Cassava is white or kind of grey in color while the one gotten from Corn or plantain are white in color. The Corn Flour is what is now modernised into Semovita today. They are all prepared by stirring the flour powder into hot boiling water to form a dough

7. Ọve (Moi-Moi from Water Yam)

Just the way Beans can be used for Moi Moi the same thing applicable to a Yam called Evina in Ebira Language (Water Yam) and the name of the Moi-Moi (end result) is called Ọve in Ebira Food.

  • 1/3 tuber of Yam
  • 5 Tbsp crayfish
  • 400 g fish
  • 1 bulb onion(diced)
  • 2 tsp ground pepper
  • 5 Tbsp soy oil or any Veg oil
  • Leaves( a handful)
  • Banana Leaves for wrapping
  • 4 seasoning cubes
  • 1 tsp of salt

8. Epeza (Beans Soup)

Epeza popularly known as Beans Soup is the type of Ebira Food (Soup). As the name implies, beans are a primary ingredient in making this delicious recipe. Below are the ingredients (Beans Soup). – Ebira Food

Ingredients of Preparing Epeza – Ebira Food

  • Beans
  • Palm oil
  • Fresh pepper and onions
  • A small piece of potash
  • Spices and seasoning cubes (maggi, salt, thyme, garlic, and grinded ginger)
  • Fish and/or meat (quantity and size to taste)
  • 2 cups of water (depending on size and quantity)

9. Gorigo Soup

Gorigo Soup is the most popular Ebira Soup just the way Apapa is the most popular Ebira Solid Food, Gorigo means Beniseed in Ebira Language.

Beniseed soup (Goribo) is a rich, healthy, low carb soup eaten with Iya (pounded yam), Eba or fufu and commonly eaten in Ebiraland and other middle belt states in Nigeria. Its appearance is very similar to that of Ipapara soup, but it tastes quite different. – Ebira Foods

Beniseed soup is made from sesame seeds and that’s what gives it that rich, nutty flavor.

Ingredients for preparing Gorigo Soup (Ebira Food)

  • Sesame Seed (Gorigo)
  • Palm Oil
  • Vegetables
  • Spices
  • Beef
  • Broth/Stock

10. Ipapara Soup (Melon Soup) – Ebira Foods

This soup is native to West Africa (Nigeria) and many of my American as well as Nigerian friends have enjoyed it. It is a kind of Ebira Food that most of my friends have enjoyed through me. It is a great soup for those who like to try something different every once in a while. Ground Ipapara seeds (Melon Seed) give this soup a unique color and flavour. If you can’t find Ipapara seeds, you can substitute pumpkin seeds. Any combination of crab, shrimp and smoked fish can be used in place of the shrimp. Drained, smoked oysters and chicken can be used in place of the beef.
