Dangote Cement Plc has clarified that a truck involved in a tragic accident on the Okene-Lokoja bypass, which resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people, does not belong to them. The crash, which occurred on April 28, involved the said cement truck and a Toyota Hiace bus, resulting in several fatalities.
The Federal Road Safety Corps initially reported that the accident was caused by the cement truck, purportedly belonging to Dangote, which collided head-on with the bus while overtaking another vehicle improperly. However, Dangote Cement’s chief branding & communications officer, Tony Chiejina, has refuted these claims, stating that after thorough checks by their Transport and Logistics Unit, it was confirmed that the truck was operated by a third party involved in cement distribution.
Despite not being responsible, Dangote Cement expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. The company also highlighted its ongoing commitment to road safety, including frequent driver training and regular maintenance of its fleet, aimed at preventing such accidents in the future. Chiejina urged the public to disregard the incorrect news linking their truck to the accident and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to road safety.
