‘He Attended Our School, But Didn’t Write WAEC,’ – Principal Exposes Kogi Guber Candidate

Fresh revelations have emerged regarding the certificate scandal surrounding Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Kogi State. It has been exposed that Ajaka did not sit for the WAEC examination at Barewa College, Zaria, despite submitting a WAEC certificate as part of his qualifications for the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recently published the final list of candidates for the election, including their respective qualifications. Ajaka’s submission of a WAEC certificate had raised concerns and attracted criticism across the state.

Adding to the confusion, the Principal of Barewa College, Alhassan Isyaku, confirmed in a letter addressed to the Kogi East Council Forum on June 8, 2023, that Ajaka had indeed attended the school but did not sit for the WAEC exam there.

“After conducting further investigations into our archived records, I can confirm that Muritala Yakubu with registration number 14667 was a student at our college from 1995 to 1998,” the Principal stated. “However, he did not sit for the WAEC exam in 1998 at our college, which is why his name is absent from the 1998 WAEC gazette.”

In response, the spokesperson for Ajaka’s campaign organization, Faruk Adejoh-Audu, sought to downplay the situation, stating on Friday that there was no need for alarm. He clarified that the candidate never claimed his result came from Barewa College. Although the spokesperson did not disclose where the examination was taken, he mentioned that it was an “external GCE certificate issued directly to the candidate by the Examination Council.”
