During a recent visit to Canada, Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasized the need for enhanced diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Canada, particularly in trade, infrastructure, security, health, and energy sectors. This call for strengthened ties stems from Nigeria’s commitment to bolstering bilateral relations in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
In meetings with Canadian officials, including Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, Minister Tuggar underscored Nigeria’s significance as Canada’s largest trade partner in Africa. Both ministers expressed a mutual commitment to deepening trade relations, especially within the framework of the AfCFTA. Discussions also centered on finalizing key agreements such as the bilateral Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPPA) ahead of the Canadian Trade Mission to Nigeria in June 2024.
Additionally, Minister Tuggar and Canadian officials deliberated on regional security in Africa, with Canada affirming its support for Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting stability and democracy in West Africa. The two countries pledged cooperation on various regional and global issues, including conflict resolution and multilateral reform.
Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar’s engagements extended beyond governmental meetings to include discussions with the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association (CAAF) and Carleton University. These discussions addressed a wide range of topics, including Nigeria-Canada relations, African regional issues, and educational cooperation. Carleton University’s partnerships with Nigerian institutions exemplify the strong educational ties between the two nations.
Furthermore, Minister Tuggar explored opportunities for enhanced trade and investment with the President of the Business Council of Canada (BCC), Goldy Hyder, focusing on renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. The Business Council of Canada expressed interest in visiting Nigeria to further advance productive engagement.
The diplomatic tour concluded with discussions with Canadian Parliamentary Secretary Maninder Sidhu on expanding bilateral trade relations. Minister Tuggar emphasized the importance of democracy, stability, and sustainable growth, particularly in the context of the AfCFTA.
