In a tragic incident, the Ondo State Police have brought charges against a 24-year-old man named Peter Adebayo for purportedly causing the death of his friend, Lekan Raji. The alleged crime occurred on February 23, 2024, at Ireakari Street in Akure, following an altercation between the two individuals.
According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, the defendant, under the influence of hard substances known as “Colorado,” reportedly struck Lekan on the head with a cooking gas cylinder after the latter confronted him about his behavior. As a result of the attack, Lekan fell and tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The charges against Adebayo, as stated by the prosecutor, contravene Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. 1 of Ondo State 2006.
During the court proceedings at the Akure Magistrate Court, the defendant did not enter a plea. Consequently, the prosecutor requested the court to remand Adebayo at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Presiding Magistrate T. O. Olusola-Olujobi granted the prosecutor’s request and ordered the defendant’s remand at the Olokota Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to March 19, 2024, awaiting further legal proceedings and advice from the DPP.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with substance abuse and highlights the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts to address such issues within communities.
