Engr. Yahaya Farouk, the Commissioner for Water Resources in Kogi State, has emphasized the utmost importance of the water sector under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. Speaking at this year’s World Water Day event themed “Leveraging Water For Peace,” held at the Ministry of Water Resources Conference Hall, Engr. Farouk disclosed significant strides in resolving water challenges across the state.
The Commissioner highlighted ongoing efforts to address impediments to water flow into homes, affirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring water accessibility for all residents. Notably, rehabilitation work has commenced at the Okene and Old Lokoja Water Works, with water supply already initiated to certain areas shortly after assuming office.
Engr. Farouk underscored the administration’s dedication to finding lasting solutions to water scarcity. He revealed the completion of a technical audit for the Greater Lokoja Water Works, a facility with a capacity of 10 million gallons daily, which has been hampered by recurrent flooding-induced damage. However, optimism prevails as comprehensive repair works are underway to restore its functionality.
Moreover, the Commissioner outlined plans to install an electronic billing system and electronic monitoring facilities to enhance operational efficiency and prevent unauthorized tampering with water infrastructure. These measures align with Governor Ododo’s directive to address electromechanical faults and improve water management.
Simultaneously, efforts are underway to rehabilitate the old Lokoja waterworks to alleviate immediate water supply challenges and mitigate future maintenance disruptions. Engr. Farouk emphasized ongoing water treatment processes aimed at improving sanitation in specific areas.
Beyond urban centers, the state is actively working to harness surface water and seasonal streams to support rural communities, ensuring water availability during dry seasons. Looking ahead, the Ministry pledges to intensify awareness and collaboration initiatives, with plans to extend World Water Day celebrations into a week-long event starting next year.
In support of these initiatives, stakeholders including Commander Balewa Francis of the Chaplain Corps and Mr. Kabiru Salihu, Chairman of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners Practitioners (AWDROP), have pledged their commitment to ensuring safe water access. Additionally, government officials such as Mr. Gabriel Akor, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, and representatives from water-related agencies have lauded the state government’s efforts in promoting water sustainability, recognizing its pivotal role in fostering peace and development.
The comprehensive approach outlined by Engr. Farouk reflects the state government’s determination to address water challenges comprehensively, ensuring equitable access to clean water for all residents of Kogi State.
