The Kogi State Government has unveiled its plans to host a trade fair and revive its dormant State People Consumer Shop (KOPECS) in a bid to stimulate the state’s economy.

Muktar Shuaibu, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, disclosed this during a statement in Lokoja on Tuesday.

Shuaibu revealed that discussions have already commenced with partners in Kano State to ensure the successful hosting of the trade fair.

“We are disheartened by the absence of trade fairs in Kogi for some time now, as they serve as significant platforms for business growth and economic advancement. However, we are committed to reviving this tradition, particularly considering Kogi’s strategic location as a gateway to both northern and southern Nigeria,” he stated.

Highlighting the state’s potential to emerge as a commercial hub, Shuaibu expressed confidence in Kogi’s ability to rival Lagos State in commerce, if not surpass it.

Furthermore, he unveiled plans to establish a large-scale market to facilitate the display and sale of a wide range of goods, aiming to attract patronage from various quarters.

Addressing concerns over soaring prices of commodities, especially food items, Shuaibu disclosed the government’s intention to revive KOPECS to regulate prices and curb inflationary pressures in the state’s markets.

“The establishment of KOPECS will play a pivotal role in stabilizing market prices and easing the economic burden on our citizens,” he affirmed.

Shuaibu also touched upon the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment, particularly from South Africa, with discussions underway in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and mining. He expressed optimism that these initiatives would contribute significantly to the state’s growth and development.

In conclusion, Shuaibu reiterated Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to enhancing the state’s economic landscape and improving the standard of living for residents.
