In a significant move to uphold educational standards, the Kogi state government has taken decisive action against illegal tertiary institutions operating within its jurisdiction. The State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, revealed this development during an oversight visit by the House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, led by Hon. Idris Aliyu Mekudi.
According to Jones, a total of 17 unauthorized tertiary institutions were identified, primarily concentrated in Ankpa local government area of Kogi State. In response, the government has not only denied these institutions access to public school facilities but has also ordered their immediate closure.
Emphasizing the importance of adherence to regulatory standards, the Commissioner stated that unapproved tertiary institutions will no longer be tolerated without meeting the necessary requirements for operation.
Furthermore, Jones highlighted the government’s renewed focus on the inspection, monitoring, and supervision of primary and secondary schools across the state. This renewed emphasis extends to a comprehensive review of the operations of private schools to ensure compliance with educational regulations.
Jones underscored the Ministry’s commitment to enforcing the education law, which grants authority to oversee private school operations. In line with this, the Ministry is intensifying efforts to restore order and quality in the education sector.
Going forward, the Ministry plans to closely monitor primary and secondary school operations to ensure alignment with the prescribed curriculum. Additionally, measures will be taken to suspend substandard private schools and establish task forces to monitor public school activities effectively.
Jones reiterated the government’s dedication to revitalizing education at the foundational level, recognizing primary and secondary education as the cornerstone of sustainable learning. This commitment underscores the administration’s resolve to prioritize and elevate the standard of education across Kogi State.
