Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun Stephen, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management in Kogi State, has expressed grave concern over the indiscriminate dumping of waste by residents, citing the potential threat it poses to public health and the environment.
During a recent visit to the temporary dumpsite situated along the Federal University Express Road in Felele, Engr. Joseph conducted an on-the-spot assessment to evaluate the current state of affairs. Accompanied by key officials including the Permanent Secretary, Director of Sanitation, and General Manager of the Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board, he observed the deplorable condition of the dumpsite and noted the absence of necessary machinery for maintenance.
Expressing dismay at the hazardous implications of indiscriminate waste disposal, the Commissioner underscored the critical need for efficient waste collection and evacuation systems to uphold environmental hygiene standards. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to fostering a healthy and sustainable environment throughout Kogi State.
Engr. Joseph urged residents to actively support government initiatives by utilizing approved dumpsites for waste disposal, thereby mitigating health risks and environmental degradation associated with improper waste management practices.
In a subsequent media interview, Alhaji Jibrin Sheidu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized that all waste generated within the Lokoja metropolis is directed to the Felele dumpsite. He highlighted the pressing necessity for machinery, particularly bulldozers, to address the encroachment of the expanding dumpsite onto the roadway, ensuring public safety and facilitating effective waste management operations.
