The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) are discussing the development of a specialized SIM card for students, according to JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede. This initiative is aimed at facilitating secure academic processes, including admission acceptances and rejections.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday, Professor Oloyede emphasized the growing necessity of having a registered telephone number for students, which has become crucial for executing sensitive academic operations. He detailed a new method for students to either accept or reject admission offers through a dedicated telephone service using the numbers 55019 or 66019. Alternatively, students can physically confirm or decline admission offers using their fingerprint at authorized CBT centers or any JAMB office.
The specialized SIM cards, which would feature limited functionalities tailored specifically for academic use, are intended to safeguard student data and enhance the integrity of the admissions process.
The announcement comes in the wake of the release of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results, where JAMB disclosed that out of 1,842,464 candidates, 77 percent scored below 200.
