FG CCT News 2023: Leveraging Microfinance Banks for Cash Transfers
Mr. Kolawole Idiaro Abdulrazaq, an expert in economics and Chairman of NET Microfinance Bank Limited, has proposed that the federal and state governments should collaborate with microfinance banks to effectively reach impoverished and vulnerable Nigerians through their conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs.
Abdulrazaq made this suggestion during the official launch of NET Microfinance Bank Limited at the Dawaki ultra-modern Market in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
President Bola Tinubu recently unveiled the CCT program for 15 million households as part of measures to mitigate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidies, which has caused a significant increase in the cost of living.
To fund this program, the federal government sought a fresh loan of $400 million from the World Bank, aiming to provide N25,000 per household for three months. This loan request, if approved, would bring the total borrowed from the World Bank for this cash transfer program to $1.2 billion, as an $800 million loan had been secured earlier for the same purpose.
The chairman of NET Microfinance Bank emphasized that the most effective way to ensure that the intended beneficiaries receive the money is by channeling it through microfinance banks, which they can easily access and relate to.
He stated, “As the federal government plans to secure foreign loans for distributing funds to the poorest and most vulnerable individuals in society, the best approach is to use microfinance banks. The government’s blueprint already indicates that funds will be distributed through banks. This is why the new CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, is committed to ensuring that the money reaches the neediest.”
He also expressed confidence in the federal government’s commitment to reaching out to those who truly need assistance, particularly through the establishment of separate ministries for humanitarian affairs and youth development.
Abdulrazaq emphasized the vital role that microfinance banks would play in achieving the government’s objectives, adding that this approach would enhance transparency and build trust among Nigerians in their elected leaders.
He explained that NET Microfinance Bank aims to serve a wide range of customers, including market traders, artisans, petty traders, street vendors, students, and others who may not have the means to open accounts with commercial banks. The bank allows accounts to be opened with as little as N1,000.
The Managing Director of NET Microfinance Bank, Mr. Saidu Yusuf, noted that they plan to assist around 10,000 people in the Bwari Area Council with their financial products. They aim to provide loans to support traders and offer assistance to local farmers by providing agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, insecticides, and seeds. This approach is intended to prevent misallocation of funds and ensure that the resources are used for farming.
