In a significant development, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has authorized the allocation of N759 billion for the construction of vital road networks connecting key regions in Nigeria. The approval, granted during a recent FEC meeting, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and facilitating socio-economic development across the country.
According to Works Minister Dave Umahi, the approved funds will be allocated towards implementing three major projects under the Ministry of Works. These projects include the construction of roads linking Obajana to Benin and Isheri to Ogun, as well as the Outer Marina Shoreline protection initiative.
Umahi clarified that the increase in cement prices does not affect the implementation of concrete road policies by the Ministry. He highlighted the importance of ongoing road projects and emphasized the government’s dedication to their completion.
One of the key projects receiving funding is the Obajana-Benin Road, spanning 244 kilometers and involving dualization over a length of 489 kilometers. Initially awarded in 2012 for light rehabilitation, the project was later reviewed and expanded to include dualization. Umahi emphasized that the project’s cost augmentation, from N122 billion to N897 billion, was necessary to ensure its successful execution. The approval also aims to re-engage contractors and accelerate project progress.
Additionally, the FEC allocated N2.23 billion to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for repairing and maintaining road infrastructure connecting Isheri North to Ogun State. This initiative seeks to provide an alternative route to alleviate congestion on the Lagos-Shagamu Road, thereby enhancing transportation efficiency in the region.
Umahi emphasized the significance of these infrastructure projects in improving connectivity and fostering economic growth. He expressed confidence that the approved funds would be utilized efficiently to address critical infrastructure needs and contribute to national development.
