The Kogi State Government has confirmed two cases of cholera in Lokoja and Omala Local Government Areas.
This confirmation was provided in a statement issued on Tuesday by Dorothy Onoja, the public relations officer of the state Ministry of Health.
In response, the state government has formed a cholera response team tasked with investigating reported cases, collecting samples, and providing appropriate treatment. The team includes healthcare workers, surveillance officers, and laboratory technicians.
“The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adeiza, announced the formation of the team following the cholera outbreak in various parts of the country,” Onoja stated.

Dr. Adeiza also introduced comprehensive infection prevention tools and reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining a cholera-free environment. He noted that Kogi State has been relatively unaffected by the current cholera outbreak, with only two confirmed cases.
“Fortunately, one case has already been discharged, and the other is currently undergoing treatment, with no fatalities recorded,” he added.
The Ministry of Health has implemented strict surveillance measures, provided extensive training to healthcare professionals, and launched widespread awareness campaigns to combat the disease’s spread.
“We have equipped our healthcare workers with the necessary training and resources to ensure a swift and effective response to any potential outbreak,” Dr. Adeiza said.
He also emphasized the importance of community involvement, highlighting the government’s collaboration with community and religious leaders and traditional rulers to educate the public on cholera prevention measures.
“Citizens are encouraged to maintain good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and drinking clean water,” he said.
