Urgent Development: Calls Emerge for President Tinubu’s Ouster – Nigerian Military Responds
In a significant turn of events, the Nigeria Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that it has received requests, originating from undisclosed sources, urging for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. This development comes amidst the ongoing political unrest in Niger Republic, where the military recently staged a coup, removing the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum from power.
According to the DHQ, the proponents of this suggested coup d’état are purportedly citing concerns about the alleged substandard welfare conditions within the Armed Forces as their motivation.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, officially affirmed this revelation through a statement disseminated via the DHQ’s official Twitter handle, @DefenceInfoNG.
The military authorities have strongly criticized the call for military intervention in the democratic processes of the nation, branding such actions as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘malevolent’. This, they argue, represents an attempt to divert the attention and commitment of the Armed Forces away from their constitutionally mandated duties.
While acknowledging the importance of ensuring the well-being of its personnel, the leadership of the DHQ emphasized its unwavering dedication to upholding democratic principles within Nigeria.
“…we vehemently oppose any endeavor by individuals or groups to incite the law-abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria towards participating in any unconstitutional alteration of government in our nation. It is crucial to state categorically that the military thrives and functions optimally within the democratic framework, and we are committed to upholding and preserving the hard-won democracy in our country.
“Under the stewardship of Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa, the AFN is fully committed to maintaining complete adherence to constitutional authority, as vested in His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We remain steadfast in our defined roles, as outlined in the 1999 constitution (as amended),” asserted Gusau.
Notably, on July 26, 2023, a faction of military personnel, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, orchestrated a successful coup that toppled the government of President Mohamed Bazoum. In the wake of this coup, General Tchiani took on the role of leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, effectively placing the ousted president under house arrest.
General Tchiani has shown a firm stance, refusing to entertain various proposals, including appeals from the ECOWAS, led by President Tinubu, to reinstate democratic governance in the nation.
Despite his limited engagement with international envoys, General Tchiani did engage in discussions with Nigeria’s former central bank governor and former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Wednesday, alongside other individuals of influence.
