In a significant transition for Namibia, 82-year-old Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, the former Vice President, has been sworn in as the fourth President of the country. The inauguration ceremony took place on Sunday in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, and was presided over by Chief Justice Peter Shivute.
Dr. Mbumba, born on August 15, 1941, is a seasoned politician and a member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). He has held various ministerial positions, including Agriculture, Water, and Rural Development; Finance; Information and Broadcasting; Education; and Safety and Security. Additionally, he served as the secretary-general of SWAPO from 2012 to 2017.
The transition of power follows the passing of former Namibian President Geingob, who died at the age of 82 on February 4, 2024, after being diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Mbumba, who had been the Acting President, announced the death and expressed the nation’s deep loss, describing Geingob as a pillar and chief architect of Namibia’s constitution.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the official commencement of Dr. Mbumba’s presidency, and he is expected to lead the nation with a focus on democracy, good governance, and cooperation among African nations. The late President Geingob was remembered by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as a veteran in the struggle for democracy and an advocate for solidarity among African peoples.
As Namibia mourns, the transition of leadership symbolizes a new chapter for the country, with Dr. Mbumba taking the helm as its fourth President.
