Tragedy struck in the Ashaka area of Ibadan, situated in the Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Oyo State, as a 55-year-old father of six, known as Abib, also called Bibson, took his own life due to economic hardship.
The distressing incident unfolded on a Sunday night and was discovered by concerned neighbors who decided to intervene the following Monday morning by breaking open the door to Abib’s residence. Upon entry, they were met with the grim sight of Abib’s lifeless body suspended from a rope tied to a ceiling fan in the living room.
Neighborhood witnesses recounted the harrowing discovery of Abib’s body and how it was carefully lowered down with the assistance of a traditionalist after a brief ritual. The matter was subsequently reported to the Mapo Police Station in Ibadan.
A senior police officer from Mapo Police Station, speaking confidentially, confirmed the tragic event and revealed that two officers were dispatched to investigate the incident.
Known as a peaceful and hardworking individual within the community, Abib operated a dry cleaning business. However, challenges mounted in his life, including a divorce from his wife due to unresolved marital issues and a wound on his hand that stemmed from a previous operation, severely impacting his livelihood.
A neighbor, speaking anonymously, shed light on Abib’s struggles with family and financial pressures, recounting how his dry cleaning business suffered due to the wound on his hand. The wound, initially treated, worsened over time, requiring intensive medical attention to prevent amputation.
The shocking news of Abib’s suicide reverberated through the neighborhood, eliciting sympathy from scores of residents who gathered at the scene. The deceased’s family laid him to rest at a public cemetery in Ibadan, marking the tragic end of a life overshadowed by economic hardship and personal challenges.
