The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 17-year-old girl, identified as Wumi, for allegedly stabbing her foster mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi, 54, to death.
Confirmation of the incident came from the State Police Command’s spokesperson, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, in a statement released on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The tragic event occurred at the residence of the deceased in Oda, Akure, last Wednesday. The police spokesperson revealed that the family of the deceased claimed the suspect had a history of mental illness. However, the command is awaiting a medical report to verify this claim.
“The suspect is currently in our custody, and we have initiated an investigation into the matter,” stated Odunlami. “The deceased, who worked at the Ondo State Ministry of Finance, had been caring for the suspect since her childhood.”
The grim discovery of the deceased’s decomposing body was made at her residence last Sunday, three days after the fatal incident. According to a neighbor, the deceased had been stabbed in the abdomen, and the doors were intentionally closed to prevent any assistance.
The remains of Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi have been deposited at the morgue of a hospital in Akure.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, awaiting further medical evaluation to determine the mental state of the suspect.
